Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Dr. Sibusiso Moyo succumbed to COVID-19 early Wednesday morning at a local hospital, the presidency said in a statement.
According to Zimbabwe’s state newspaper, The Herald, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Acting Minister Jenfan Muswere confirmed the minister’s death but did not give further details.
“I can confirm for now that Minister SB Moyo has died,” Muswere said.
He becomes the third Zimbabwean minister to succumb to the virus following the deaths of former agriculture minister Perrance Shiri last year and last week’s passing of ex-Manicaland provincial minister Ellen Gwaradzimbe.
Moyo, a former military man, played a key role in the outsing of late former president Robert Mugabe by leading communications at the time.
He was appointed foreign minister by President Emmerson Mnangagwa shortly after the overthrow of Mugabe and retired from the military soon after.
He was famed for announcing the November 2017 coup which ultimately lead to the removal of then-President Robert Gabriel Mugabe after 37 years at the helm of the country.
