Uganda Premier League champions Express FC were crowned winners of the 2021 CECAFA Kagame Cup after defeating Nyasa Big Bullets of Malawi 1-0 in the final on Saturday at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Martin Kizza scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half to settle a nervy encounter which was the second meeting between the two clubs during this tournament.

The first meeting during the group stage had ended in a 1-1 draw.

Victory for Express FC ensured the trophy will remain in Uganda following KCCA FC’s triumph in 2019. The tournament was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Express coach Wasswa Bbosa expressed his delight with his side’s win adding that it will serve them well as they prepare to qualify for the group stage of the continent’s top-tier club competition.

“This tournament has helped us prepare well ahead of the CAF Champions League where we play El Merreikh next month,” Bbosa said.

There was, however, some consolation for Nyasa Big Bullets, a guest side in the regional tournament, as Yamikani Fodya was voted the tournament’s best player.

The third/fourth place playoff was won by Zanzibar’s KMKM SC who edged 10-man Azam FC side 1-0 earlier in the day.
