World 10,000m record holder Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia came third in the women’s 10,000m on Saturday, as Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won the race.

Gidey claimed bronze in 30:01.72 behind Kalkidan Gezahegne of Bahrain in 29:56.18 while Hassan crossed the finish line first in 29:55.32 to claim a 5,000m and 10,000m double to add to her 1,500m bronze medal at the Tokyo Games.

Close to two months ago, Gidey smashed the women’s 10,000m world record in Hengelo, Netherlands, clocking a time of 29 minutes, 1.03 seconds on the same track where Hassan had set the previous record just two days previously.

Gidey’s third-place finish means Ethiopia is currently tied in 53rd place in the medal standings, with Portugal, having won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
