CAF Confederation Cup: Pyramids edge CS Sfaxien to maintain 100 percent record

Egyptian side Pyramids FC made it three wins out of three matches after defeating three-time winners CS Sfaxien of Tunisia 1-0 in their CAF Confederation Cup Group A match at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on Sunday.

Defender Ali Gabr scored the only goal of the game in the third minute of added time in the second half as the 2020 runners-up edged ever closer to qualifying for the knockout phase of the tournament.

Al Ahly Tripoli scored twice in the final 11 minutes of normal time to beat Zanaco 2-0 in Benghazi to take second place three points behind Pyramids and leave the Zambian side pointless after their opening three fixtures.

In Group B, South African giants Orlando Pirates came from two goals down to thrash Eswatini’s Royal Leopards 6-2 in Manzini.

Terrence Dzvukamanja scored twice for Pirates who bounced back emphatically from last week’s defeat to Libyan side Al-Ittihad.

Meanwhile, Al-Ittihad drew 1-1 with JS Saoura in Benghazi to leave both sides unbeaten and lie in joint second place on four points, two points behind group leaders Pirates. Royal Leopards are yet to pick up a point and, like Al-Ittihad, have a game in hand.

In Group D, goals from Adama Ba and Charki El Bahri earned RS Berkane a 2-0 home win against Simba SC to send the Moroccan side top of the table.

The group was also thrown wide open after Nigerien side US Gendarmerie beat ASEC Mimosas 2-0 in Niamey.

RS Berkane leads the way with six points followed by Simba and US Gendarmerie on four points while ASEC Mimosas are bottom albeit with three points.

In Group C, TP Mazembe edged Cotonsport 1-0 with Glody Likonza scoring the decisive goal four minutes from the end of normal time while Otoho d’Oyo beat Al Masry by a similar score courtesy of a late strike by Roland Okouri.
