CAF Confederation Cup: ASEC Mimosas stuns Berkane, Pyramids beat Zanaco

Egyptian side Pyramids F.C. is one of two teams with a 100 percent record following the latest round of matches of the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

Fagrie Lakay scored in both halves as Pyramids F.C., runners-up in 2020, defeated Zanaco 2-0 at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

The other group game saw Al Ahly Tripoli defeat three-time winners CS Sfaxien 2-1 in Benghazi to claim their first win of the campaign.

Pyramids F.C. leads Group A with six points from two games followed by Al Ahly Tripoli and CS Sfaxien, both with three points, while Zanaco is bottom without a point.

Meanwhile, Côte d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas scored three goals in 13 second-half minutes to shock 2020 champions RS Berkane of Morocco 3-1 in Abidjan in Group D.

Stephane Aziz Ki, Souleymane Coulibaly and Karim Konate netted for ASEC Mimosas while Charki El Bahri grabbed a late consolation for Berkane.

Tanzanian giants Simba needed an 84th minute equalizer by Bernard Morrison to salvage a 1-1 draw away to US Gendarmerie in Niamey and maintain their unbeaten start.

Simba tops the group with four points followed by ASEC Mimosas and RS Berkane, respectively, with three points and US Gendarmerie in fourth with one point.

In Group B, Omar Al Khouja scored a second-half winner as Libya’s Al-Ittihad defeated 2015 runners-up Orlando Pirates in Benghazi.

Sanad Al Warfali and Muad Eisa twice gave the hosts the lead but Bandile Shandu equalized for the South African side before Al Khouja struck.

Algeria’s JS Saoura scored two penalties through Belaid Hamidi and Mohamed Hammia to beat Royal Leopards 2-0.

Orlando Pirates is joint top of the group with Al-Ittihad on three points but the latter has a game in hand having yet to play against Royal Leopards. JS Saoura also has three points in third position, albeit with an inferior goal difference, while Royal Leopards are bottom with zero points.

In Group C, Al Masry defeated two-time champions TP Mazembe 2-0 to go top with four points while the Congolese side dropped to second with three points.

Cameroon’s Cotonsport and Otoho d’Óyo of Congo lie third and fourth, respectively, but are yet to play each other.
