The Zambian government on Monday received 2,000 oxygen cylinders which will help curtail the shortage of the commodity due to increased COVID-19 cases.

The oxygen cylinders from I.K. Charitable, a non-governmental charity organization of Zambia, will enable the government to ensure the improved provision of the commodity.

Kennedy Malama, Permanent Secretary in charge of Technical Services in the Ministry of Health, said the government is grateful for the donation.

“As a response, we have continued ramping up procurement of oxygen cylinders, concentrators and oxygen delivery services,” he said.

He urged various partners to prioritize oxygen delivery services because of the high number of patients requiring a high flow of oxygen, adding that the government has continued to combat the pandemic in a multisectoral manner through various measures.

The cumulative cases now stand at 165,513 following 1,231 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours.

A total of 2,780 patients were discharged during the same period, bringing the total recoveries to 145,908 while 49 people died, bringing the total deaths to 2,492.
