Uganda’s Ministry of Health on Sunday reported 1,259 new COVID-19 cases out of 7,289 samples tested, the highest figure since the government declared a second wave of infections and deaths had hit the country.

The figure eclipses the previous record of 1,247 which was reported on Friday. Uganda has now reported a total of 52,935 confirmed cases.

According to ministry figures, 1,256 of the cases were contacts and alerts with the capital Kampala accounting for majority of the cases with 825.

Three of the remaining cases were reported from truck drivers who came from Tanzania through Mutukula border town.

The ministry also reported nine new COVID-19-related deaths taking the death toll to 383.

Uganda is currently facing the second wave of the pandemic, which is more deadly and devastating. Health experts say the wave is worse than the first one since it is more transmissible and affecting young people.

Since the beginning of the month, Uganda has reported more than 5,000 new cases and more than 20 deaths from the deadly disease.

On Friday, the government indefinitely halted the planned reopening of schools for lower classes and a special term for semi-candidates due to the surge in cases and deaths.

President Yoweri Museveni is scheduled to address the nation on Sunday on new preventive measures to contain the increasing infections and deaths.
