The Ugandan government has rolled out a campaign to ramp up vaccination in the northeast region of Karamoja as it seeks to better protect the public from COVID-19.
The campaign targets nine districts in the region to increase vaccine uptake from the current 16 per cent up to more than 90 per cent.
In this regard, the health ministry deployed 500,000 doses of vaccines to be administered to all eligible persons in the region.
“While Uganda is currently experiencing a decrease in the new COVID-19 cases, vaccination which was very instrumental in bringing the cases down should be promoted and taken up by all who are eligible,” said Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng.
Aceng reiterated the need to continue with the other health protocols as a complement to vaccination, including hand hygiene, social distancing and wearing of face masks.
Uganda has so far recorded 162,755 COVID-19 infections with 3,574 fatalities, according to the latest data by the health ministry.
So far, a total of 15,610,547 doses of vaccines have been administered across the country.
