South African healthcare workers who were vaccinated early this year are scheduled to receive COVID-19 booster shots starting on Wednesday.

Up to 496,424 health care workers will be the first to receive the booster shots, according to Foster Mohale, spokesperson for the National Health Department.

Chairperson of the South African Medical Association Angelique Coetzee welcomed the news that booster shots were scheduled prior to the fourth wave.

“We are happy as we want healthcare workers to be protected before the fourth wave comes. Studies show that the efficacy of the jab wanes after months,” she said.

According to Coetzee, there was a keen interest in receiving the booster shots because medical workers would still be at the forefront when the fourth wave of the virus strikes.
