Rwanda closes schools as COVID-19 cases surge

Rwanda has announced a review of COVID-19 restriction measures due to a surge in cases and the emergence of new variants globally.

Effective July 1, schools and higher education institutions in Kigali, Burera, Gicumbi, Kamonyi, Musanze, Nyagatare, Rubavu, Rutsiro and Rwamagana will be closed. Provisions for students sitting national exams in July 2021 will be communicated by the ministry of education.

Movements in the said areas have been prohibited between 6 pm-4 am. All businesses must close by 5 pm.

Vendors/traders in markets and trading centres shall operate at 50% capacity, selling only food and essential items.

Places of worship, bars remain closed, While restaurants shall offer only take-away service. Traditional, civil and religious weddings remain suspended.

Arriving and departing passengers at Kigali International Airport must present a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours before departure.

These measures shall be reviewed after two weeks, upon health assessment.

In the remaining parts of the country, movements are prohibited between 6 pm-4 am. With business required to close by 5 pm. These among other measures shall be in force for 2 weeks.

Movement between districts are not allowed, except for medical reasons and other essential services. Vehicles transporting goods will continue to operate with no more than 2 people on board.
