COVID-19’s case fatality rate in Botswana has increased to one percent since January from 0.3 percent last year, an official said Monday.
Mosepele Mosepele, the deputy coordinator of Botswana’s COVID-19 Task Force Team, said the number of confirmed deaths alienated by the number of confirmed cases clearly shows a significant growth in ratio.
In 2020, the case fatality rate was alternating between 0.3 and 0.5 percent, said Mosepele when giving a weekly update on COVID-19 incidents in the southern African country.
“However, the number of confirmed deaths divided by the number of confirmed cases overall is now standing at 1 percent this year,” said Mosepele.
Botswana registered 25,802 COVID-19 cases and 226 deaths while 21, 893 have fully recovered from the global pandemic and are considered noninfectious.
Meanwhile, Botswana is yet to announce the exact date at which the COVID-19 vaccine is expected to arrive in the country.
President Mokgweetsi Masisi has started negotiating with companies manufacturing the vaccine with an intention to procure it. Masisi recently announced that Botswana plans to vaccinate every citizen of the nation against the deadly COVID-19 pandemic once available.
