South African rugby franchise the Cell C Sharks on Thursday announced the signing of Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth on a long-term contract until 2027.
Etzebeth, who currently plays for French Top 14 side Toulon, will join the Durban-based side in July once the season in France ends.
Toulon had released a statement last week saying Etzebeth will be released early from his contract to return to South Africa for personal reasons.
The Sharks described the signing of Etzebeth as a “major coup” and the 30-year-old will link up with fellow Springbok players and World Cup winners Siya Kolisi, Bongi Mbonambi, Makazole Mapimpi and Lukhanyo Am.
“Following on the heels of other major international signings in the past two years, reflecting The Sharks desire and commitment to being a global force in rugby, Etzebeth’s return to South Africa, and to The Sharks, is a huge statement about the attraction the Durban side holds to players of repute.”
Etzebeth, who previously played for another South African side, the DHL Stormers, said he was looking forward to beginning a “wonderful chapter in my career.”
“Family and being closer to home was a big motivating factor, as well as being able to represent a great team like the Cell C Sharks.”
“I’m looking forward to playing at The Shark Tank, the local derbies against the Bulls, Stormers and Lions will be awesome. I’m looking forward to being back in South Africa and playing in front of the Sharks fans there.”
