Ghana on Wednesday commenced phase two of its mass vaccination against COVID-19 in 43 inoculation centers across the country.
The health officials are expected to administer a total of 350,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines delivered to Ghana through the COVAX facility.
Scores of persons who took their first jabs about two months ago who are expected to receive their second jabs thronged the vaccination centers on day one of the exercise to complete their inoculation program.
Director of Public Health at the Ghana Police Hospital and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Samuel Otu-Nyarko told Xinhua that his outfit had received the necessary logistics meant for the exercise.
“The logistics that we have now are based on the number that we have between March 1-9 so that is what we are going to do,” he said.
Out-Nyarko expressed fear several persons who are not supposed to be vaccinated now will rush to the center in an attempt to get the jab.
He, however, urged the Ghanaian public to continue to observe the protocols in place to help defeat the virus.
“Ghanaians should take this thing seriously. We are just lucky. We had our first wave, second wave and now it looks like it is going down but we should not lose our guard. The protocols that we used in the first round, we must stick to them,” Out-Nyarko added.
Anthony Worwornyo, a retired police officer expressed delight after taking the second and final jab.
“Everything is okay. I haven’t experienced any adverse effects. I hope the public, everybody will take advantage,”
The West African country was the first to receive vaccines from the World Health Organization-backed COVAX in February and kicked off its vaccination campaign in early March.
