Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down from his position as Nigeria’s national football team coach following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana qualified for the global competition at the expense of Nigeria, needing only a 1-1 draw in Abuja to see them through.
Despite the two-legged clash ending 1-1, the Black Stars went through on the basis of their away goal.
The failure was the second heartbreak for Nigerian football fans, having also failed to go past the Round of 16 in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament played I January-February.
Eguavoen, 56, took charge of the Super Eagles in December in an interim capacity, following the sacking of long-serving coach Gernot Rohr.
The rest of the team’s coaching staff was also relieved of their duties.
“We thank the coaches and team officials for their service to the nation and wish them success in their future endeavors,” said NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi.
The team’s focus will now shift to qualifying for the 2023 AFCON.
