Kenya’s health ministry on Saturday reported 1,667 new COVID-19 cases from 8,703 tests conducted over the past 24 hours, taking the total number of infections to 310,797.

In the same period, the ministry registered 12 new deaths, taking the total number of virus-related fatalities to 5,437.

The East African country is seeing a gradual decline in the number of new infections and deaths, having seen its pandemic situation peak in mid-December.

The country is banking on vaccinations to contain further spread of the virus.

So far, a total of 10,572,187 vaccines have been administered across the country. Of these, 6,030,173 are partially vaccinated while those fully vaccinated are 4,468,661.

The government last month imposed stringent restrictions affecting unvaccinated persons in efforts to boost the inoculation numbers.

It has also remained steady in urging the public to continue adhering to health protocols aimed at containing the pandemic.
