Business community in Kenya urged to intensify efforts for fighting COVID-19

Kenya on Monday called on the business community to intensify efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 amid a surge in cases.

Betty Maina, cabinet secretary of the Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and Enterprise Development, told journalists in Nairobi, capital of Kenya, that the current fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic could potentially overrun the health sector and at the same time worsen the economic downturn.

While saying that COVID-19 is likely to stay for an indeterminate future and so the guidelines for safe business operations during COVID-19 will ensure that premises do not turn into avenues of spreading the virus to workers and clients, Maina noted the last one year and four months have been very challenging for the business community because their output was curtailed on account of the measures employed by the government to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Maina, if the surge of infections is under control through observing the containment measures, business operations will remain normal besides saving on medical expenses and loss of man-hours.

“Non-adherence is likely to lead to the spread of the virus hence necessitating stringent measures that will further curtail business operations,” Maina added.

Kenya’s Ministry of Health has partnered with multilateral bodies to roll out inoculation against COVID-19, reduce infections, fatalities while hastening a return to normalcy.

The country has administered 1.72 million COVID-19 vaccines as of Friday, including 1.06 million first doses and 662,104 second doses, while 2.4 percent of the adult population is fully immunized.

The east African nation has so far recorded 203,680 COVID-19 confirmed cases, 189,131 recoveries, and 3,946 deaths as of Sunday.
